Dear Sophy Tidswell
While going through my deceased father's papers I found a letter from you dated 9.04.81 requesting information about the Dovell family. I would have expected my father to have replied to your letter but I cannot find any further correspondence. As I have only just found documents relating to my grand parents in Islington London in the 1880s I wonder if you have any further information which may throw light on how we may be related.
Kind regards
Ian Dovell

Leslie Ginsberg - a lovely man and inspirational Planner. He interviewed and appointed us - Geoff Crook and I - and when we arrived to start the term Peter Dovell was in charge. Of both I have warm memories. After forming and developing Midland Area Improvemnet Housing Association and moving to London, Leslie and I worked together on some community schemes.
I would appreciater E mails from anyone of those times alan@plannsussex.co.uk

I'm afraid the dislike of red tape is a family trait !!
He moved from Birmingham to the University of Manchester where he was appointed Professor of Urban Design. He ran a masters course there until his retirement.

Sophy, I remember the scene as it was our welcome as U/G year 1 in 65 and we did have to cope with the hole in the wall for quite some time.

Peter Dovell was a great head, an inspirational man and a brilliant lecturer. It was a tragedy that his 'get on with it' attitude made him 'un-pc' and so he didn't get the prof's post he so richly deserved.

Judith Knowles was an excellent back up as deputy head and I owe a lot to them, Geoff and Alan Edgar for shaping the raw youth I was at that time.

The gentlemanly landscape architect was Paul Edwards, a very nice guy. Dave Sewell was a DC based lecturer who had been or still was with Worcestershire. Ned in Les Herbert's pic was Ned Stokes, u/g year 2 (66), who failed the year, became a corporation bus driver and then returned to the course, famed fo Eskimo Nell recitations on the bus back from Entscomm do's and a very good lighting and stage management man

Alan Green, good to see you're still there, what happened to Geoff?

My father is Peter Dovell. I can remember the day he came back home covered in dust after knocking the wall down - I even think we have a photo somewhere.

Pat, well fair haired then, now greyish but still some left. I was a DJ at the "Impact" disco, who remembers that? My claim to fame was uttering the immortal words-"and now it`s Junior Walker and the all stars" We drew lots for that .Did you do the lights for that, slides with liquid patterns? I worked at Croydon for a bit with Mic Yaxley and then Salisbury for a year and then Hampshire, ending up as the planning manager on the ill fated tram scheme for Fareham-Gosport- Portsmouth, thanks Mr Darling for blowing that at the death when all the really hard work had been done! Then back to HQ for more "spatial strategy" as strategic planning is now called. Retired last year and ran into Keith Perry, recently returned from Hong Kong. Didn`t hear about the reunion event until I saw it reported in the City Uni newsletter. I have heard Chris Hargreaves is still at Birmingham City?

I also remember the young ones in the photo; I say young as I was possibly 2 years ahead of the group leaving in 1978. Gareth Jones has had a good career back in Wales and is Asst Chief at Torfaen. Surely there are more photos from the 70s particularly the degree ceremony in City Hall with all the lads lined up in cap and gown in gents loo after a swift pint in the Prince of Wales. Nice to hear Alan Green still lecturing - I still remember the freshers trip down Bham Canal on a boat filled with free beer, thanks to Alan. I'm now back in Wales Head of Planning at Powys, but where are the class of 78 now?
