Dear Sophy Tidswell
While going through my deceased father's papers I found a letter from you dated 9.04.81 requesting information about the Dovell family. I would have expected my father to have replied to your letter but I cannot find any further correspondence. As I have only just found documents relating to my grand parents in Islington London in the 1880s I wonder if you have any further information which may throw light on how we may be related.
Kind regards
Ian Dovell

I'm afraid the dislike of red tape is a family trait !!
He moved from Birmingham to the University of Manchester where he was appointed Professor of Urban Design. He ran a masters course there until his retirement.

Sophy, I remember the scene as it was our welcome as U/G year 1 in 65 and we did have to cope with the hole in the wall for quite some time.

Peter Dovell was a great head, an inspirational man and a brilliant lecturer. It was a tragedy that his 'get on with it' attitude made him 'un-pc' and so he didn't get the prof's post he so richly deserved.

Judith Knowles was an excellent back up as deputy head and I owe a lot to them, Geoff and Alan Edgar for shaping the raw youth I was at that time.

My father is Peter Dovell. I can remember the day he came back home covered in dust after knocking the wall down - I even think we have a photo somewhere.

Thanks for a good read Alan. I did not realise until now that when - in February 1969 - I met you in the lift on my way to an interview with Alan Edgar & Brian Jackson for a place on the course that you were such a freshly minted lecturer!
I last saw Alan Edgar in Dubai airport 18months ago, when he was in transit back from visiting grandchildren in Australia and I was returning from a conference in Sharja. I think he still lives at the Galleon Hotel, Cuckmere Harbour, East Sussex but I do not know the exact address. If Miriam Bright wants me to find the exact address I would be happy to do so - she can contact me on mikegibson45 at aol.com
Hope to see you in a couple of weeks

Hello

I would like to get in touch with Alan Edgar who you mention above, I have been requested to do this by his cousin (David Sneddon). I'm not sure if this is the same Alan Edgar but would be really grateful for any help you can give.

Thank you
